Awards and distinctions

Throughout my career I have received honorary doctorates awarded by prestigious universities from different parts of the world, as well as awards from institutions that are fighting for the preservation of natural resources and equal access to opportunities for all human beings. I express my appreciation to those who have considered me worthy of such distinctions, and I invite them to continue working together in projects endorsing the principles of sustainable development.


2007 PODER - Boston Consulting Group Philanthropy Award

PODER Green Forum, Miami

In April 2007, the PODER-Green Forum brought business, political and academic leaders from throughout the world together in Miami to discuss the most pressing issue of our time: the environment.

As a main activity, PODER and the Boston Consulting Group rewarded selected personalities for their important initiatives throughout the Americas, among them Stephan Schmidheiny who received the Philanthropy Award.

2001 Honorary Doctorate in Arts

Rollins College

Rollins College, a center for academic innovation and excellence whose objective is to form active, environmentally responsible citizens, future protagonists and leaders in a global world, awarded Stephan Schmidheiny with this distinction “in recognition for his work as a role model for business leaders and for citizens of every country, to his practice of illuminated leadership and to his contributions to the betterment of living standards throughout the world”.

Catholic University Andrés Bello (UCAB)

UCAB is a private non-profit organization belonging to the Society of Jesus that emphasizes higher education based on values linked to social development. This institution, based in Caracas, distinguished Stephan Schmidheiny with an honorary doctorate due to his commitment to fostering entrepreneurial practices that contribute to the economic growth of developing countries, favoring the integration of its citizens and the social backing of the needy.

Latin Trade Magazine, with a circulation of 400,000 copies, and read by multinational company CEOs and government departments from all over the world, proclaimed Stephan Schmidheiny Environmentalist of the Year during Bravo Award’s third edition, highlighting his role as a leading entrepreneur committed to sustainable development administration and management.

Since its foundation in 1701, Yale University has devoted itself to higher education in different disciplines - medicine, law, administration - becoming an educational center of excellence at the international level.
